Alexander Group is a family-owned New Zealand transport and logistics company, moving critical freight since 1971. We specialise in freight with higher stakes and less room for error: dangerous goods, bulk liquids and gases, chilled and frozen food, food grade liquids, intermodal freight and ad hoc movements. We also design, run and manage dedicated fleets for businesses that want to stop running transport in-house.
Working with us
About Alexander Group
We operate nationwide from 11 strategic locations across the North and South Islands, with our head office in Ellerslie, Auckland. Inter-island freight moves by ferry or coastal shipping, planned as one connected movement.
Our team of 150 people runs a fleet that includes 85 specialised trucks and trailers. It is modern, Euro 6 compliant and configured around the freight we carry, from tankers and cylinder decks to temperature-controlled units.
We support four sectors where transport performance directly affects safety, production and reputation: gas and cryogenics, chemicals and solvents, chilled and frozen foods, and oil and lubricants.
Tell us what needs to move, where from and to, how often and any handling or compliance requirements, using the request a quote form. You can also call our office on +64 21 245 3326 or business enquiries on +64 21 228 9735.
Dangerous goods
Dangerous goods transport
Yes. Dangerous goods transport is one of our core specialities. We move bulk and packaged dangerous goods across New Zealand, including Class 2 gases, Class 3 flammable liquids and Class 5 oxidising substances, for one-off movements or as an ongoing, embedded service.
Road transport of dangerous goods is governed by the Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005, which covers packaging, labelling, documentation, segregation, vehicle equipment and the responsibilities of everyone in the supply chain. Drivers carrying dangerous goods in quantities above the rule's limits for commercial transport must hold a dangerous goods (D) endorsement. We plan every movement against the product's class, safety data sheet and compatibility requirements.
Yes. Drivers who carry dangerous goods hold the D endorsement and complete structured onboarding plus customer and load-specific training. Performance is monitored and coached in the cab, and our drivers rank in the top 6% globally for Driver Evaluation scores through Scania ProDriver.
Yes. Alongside bulk tanker work we distribute packaged dangerous goods and gas cylinders, including cylinder packs, bundles and pallets, for linehaul, final-mile and consolidated movements.
Bulk liquids and gas
Bulk liquid, LPG and gas transport
From petrol to pinot noir. We move fuels, oils and lubricants, industrial and cryogenic gases, chemicals and solvents, and food grade liquids such as wine, juice and water. Each product is matched with the right tanker, equipment, procedures and trained operator.
Yes. We transport bulk LPG and industrial and cryogenic gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide, using pressure-rated and temperature-controlled equipment. We have partnered with BOC on dangerous goods logistics since 2002.
Yes. We can run Alexander Group trucks and trailers, your own equipment, or a combination of both, with our drivers, scheduling and operating systems behind it.
Food and cold chain
Chilled and frozen freight
Yes. We provide temperature-controlled transport for chilled and frozen food, using dedicated routes, fleets and drivers planned around production schedules. Inghams has relied on us as the first link in its supply chain.
Contract logistics
Contract logistics and dedicated fleets
It is where we provide the fleet, drivers, scheduling, reporting and governance built around your business, instead of you owning and running transport in-house. It can range from a single dedicated vehicle to a fully managed national network.
Common signs are vehicles running below capacity or returning empty, too much fixed capacity in quiet periods and not enough at peak, rising maintenance and replacement costs, unclear cost per route or load, and driver shortages or overtime. We can review your network and show whether redesign, partial outsourcing or a fully managed fleet would deliver a better result.
Yes. We work where you work, inside your scheduling and rostering systems, and connect operational data across safety, fleet and service performance so you get clear reporting and better information for decisions.
Intermodal and ad hoc
Intermodal, linehaul and one-off freight
Intermodal freight combines road, rail, coastal shipping, inter-island ferry and port-linked movements in one journey. We design and coordinate the whole movement, manage every handover and keep one point of responsibility from origin to destination.
Yes. Our ad hoc freight service handles irregular, oversized, sensitive, regulated or urgent movements, with the same planning and discipline as our long-term operations. We also offer North–South linehaul capacity.
Safety and sustainability
Safety, compliance and sustainability
Safety is built into every movement: AI-enabled fleet safety monitoring, a modern Euro 6 fleet with engineered safety features, driver fatigue management built into network design, and ongoing training, monitoring and coaching for every driver. Our commitment is simple: every driver home safely, every day.
Our fleet runs on Euro 6 engine technology, and we are trialling electric heavy vehicles in live specialist freight, including an electric truck pilot with Air Liquide. Sustainability is part of our wider framework covering customers, fleet, innovation and our people.
Careers
Careers
We regularly recruit drivers and office-based staff. New drivers get a structured start, dangerous goods endorsement training where needed and a pathway to becoming a trainer, in a family-owned business with drivers who have 20 years' service.
